What is Mallenders & Sallenders (M&S)?
M&S is a skin condition in horses, specifically affecting the lower legs. Characterised by the overproduction of keratin, it leads to thickened, crusty scabs in areas like the back of the knee (Sallenders) and the front of the hock (Mallenders). These tend to be found in heavy breeds such as cobs and draft horses with feathered legs. Problems caused can be pain, discomfort, bacterial and fungal infections and even lameness if left untreated.
There is no cure because the overproduction of keratin cannot be stopped. This cream works to manage the issue and needs to be regularly applied.
This photo shows the progress after just 2 weeks of daily applications on a lovely Fell Pony called Little Fred.
Heavily feathered horses often have skin problems and feather mites on the lower leg normally restricted to the area covered by feathers. A waxy build up is often present at the back of the knee in the front legs and also in front of the hock joint of the back legs. Because these areas are flexed, it is very difficult to protect and stop infection setting in. Farriers M&S Cream is a topical cream for managing the condition Mallanders and Sallenders with anti bacterial, anti fungal and antiseptic properties. Made using 100% natural ingredients and essential oils. This cream is highly water and mud repellent and, when applied, creates a barrier and aids in protecting these sensitive areas, allowing for the body’s natural ability to start the healing process.
What are Feather Mites?
Feather mites are miniscule parasites found on the legs of feathered horses, living on the skin and feeding on the dead skin cells. They do not travel any further than the feathers so you will not find them in manes or tails for instance. They can also feed off the scabs formed through Mallenders & Sallenders so the two conditions often go hand in hand. This leads to an irritated horse with very itchy skin with scabs forming and a cycle of inflammation and itching (caused by the horse rubbing, biting and stamping) which can be very hard to break, especially as the mites are easily transmitted. You can save on vet treatments which only work on the adult mites. The spray help to keep in control of feather mites week after week, leading to a happier horse and owner!
** Consider our Triple Pack which also includes a shampoo to help initially and sporadically clean the feathers alongside treating the mites and M&S **
DIRECTIONS:
Farrier Biosect Mite Spray is water based and easy to apply with the spray bottle supplied or can be sponged on for horses that do not like sprays. Farriers Biosect works by coming in to direct contact with the Mites. It is important to thoroughly soak the skin area below the feather with this solution as this is where the mites live. Farriers Biosect Mite Spray is only effective on adult mites and you will need to reapply 10 days after initial application to ensure that any newly hatched eggs are taken care of. Use routinely after this.
Remember mites are very transmittable between horses and can be caught from shared areas of the yard like scratching posts. It is best to treat all the horses in contact with each other!
Our M&S cream is known to soothe and soften. Put a small amount on the affected area twice a day for a week then reduce to once daily for 3 days. There is no need to pick the scabs off as they will soften, just gently comb out.
Use routinely as part of your grooming regime.
Biosect Spray contains plant-based insecticide and eucalyptus essential oil.
Farriers M&S cream contains zinc oxide as well as lavender and cedarwood essential oils.
